The country you come to for the water

The Philippines is the least-visited of the six countries on this site and the one that surprises people most, because the landscape is genuinely different: limestone islands standing in water clear enough to see the anchor chain, and an archipelago so spread out that getting between two good places often means a flight and a boat rather than a road.

That is the trade. Travel here is less efficient than in Vietnam or Thailand and the internal flights matter more, but Palawan in particular has scenery that nowhere on the mainland can answer. Cebu and Bohol are easier — reef, rivers, hills, a short boat between them — and make a better first island pair for travellers with a week rather than a fortnight.

When to come

December to May is the dry season, and March to May is both the driest and the hottest. The typhoon season runs roughly from June to November and peaks between August and October; the storms are regional rather than national, so a typhoon warning over Luzon does not necessarily touch Palawan, but it does mean flights are cancelled and itineraries need slack. We build a spare day into any Philippine leg in those months and book the connecting flight home with a night’s margin.

Three means the month usually works everywhere in that region, two means it works with a plan, one means rain, heat or sea conditions will shape your days. No month is closed to all six countries: when the Mekong is in flood, Bali and the Philippines are at their driest.

Getting there and getting in

As with Indonesia, there is no land route: you fly, usually from Bangkok, Singapore or Ho Chi Minh City into Manila or Cebu, and then take a domestic flight to the islands. Entry itself is the simplest of the six countries.

Thirty days visa-free for around 190 nationalities, including the UK, EU, US, Canada, Australia, Japan and South Korea.
eTravel registration is compulsory and free, filed within 72 hours of arrival — some airlines will not board you without the QR code.
A return or onward ticket is a formal condition of entry, not just advice.
Your passport must be valid for six months beyond the date you leave the country, which is stricter than the usual rule.

Vietnam and Thailand, by air — Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok both connect to Manila and Cebu daily. It also pairs with Indonesia for travellers who want a fortnight entirely on the water, though that is a long way east and the connection normally goes through Singapore. What it does not pair with is a tight mainland schedule: the internal flights need room to move.

Do I need a visa for the Philippines?

Almost certainly not: thirty days visa-free covers around 190 nationalities. You do need eTravel registration within 72 hours of arrival, and a return or onward ticket — both are checked.

How risky is the typhoon season?

Between August and October, real but manageable. Storms are regional, so we build itineraries with a spare day and keep your flight out a day clear. What we will not do is sell a tight island-hopping schedule in September.

El Nido or Coron?

El Nido for the lagoons and the bigger choice of places to stay; Coron for wreck diving and quieter water. Five nights lets you do both, with the ferry or the short flight between them.
