The quietest capital in Southeast Asia

Vientiane has fewer people than most provincial cities in Vietnam and behaves accordingly. It sits on a bend of the Mekong with Thailand visible on the far bank, and the centre is a grid of low French and Lao buildings, tamarind trees, bakeries and a riverside promenade that fills for two hours each evening and then empties. Travellers arriving from Bangkok or Hanoi usually describe the first afternoon as disorienting and the second as restful.

It is a hinge rather than a destination. One night is what most of our routes give it and one night is defensible: an afternoon of temples, an hour that matters more than the temples, dinner by the river, and a train or a bridge in the morning.

What an afternoon here should contain

Three buildings and a market, in this order. Pha That Luang is the national symbol — a gold-covered stupa of stacked terraces, best late in the day when the whole thing turns orange. Wat Si Saket is the oldest surviving temple in the city, the only one the Siamese army left standing in 1828, and its cloister walls hold thousands of small Buddha images in niches. Haw Phra Kaew next door is now a museum of Lao and Khmer bronzes.

One hour that is not optional

The COPE visitor centre, attached to the national rehabilitation centre, explains what happened to this country between 1964 and 1973 and what is still happening because of it. More than two million tonnes of ordnance were dropped on Laos, much of it as cluster submunitions, and a large share failed to detonate and is still in the ground — which is why people are injured in rural provinces more than fifty years later, and why COPE makes prosthetic limbs. It is free, it takes an hour, and it is the most important thing in the city. It is handled with clarity and without any attempt to harrow you; we send everybody, including families with older children.

November to February is dry and pleasant, with mornings cool enough for a layer and afternoons in the high twenties. April is genuinely unpleasant, when the city holds heat overnight. The rains from June are heavy but short and the Mekong rises visibly week by week. The one thing worth timing deliberately is the boat racing festival at the end of the rains, which fills every hotel in the city.

Two stations, one bridge

Vientiane is the only place in Laos where three ways out of the country sit within half an hour of each other, and confusing them is a real risk. The Laos–China railway runs from a station north of the city to Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and eventually China. Khamsavath station carries the short rail link across the Mekong to Thailand. Friendship Bridge I, twenty-five kilometres out, is the road crossing to Nong Khai, from where overnight trains run to Bangkok. All three are on the list of nine ports where the Lao e-visa is valid, which most Lao crossings are not.

Japanese passports have 30 days visa-free; British, EU, American, Australian and Canadian passports need a visa. The Lao e-visa is single entry, 30 days, and must be carried printed — a phone screen is refused. It is valid at nine ports only: Wattay, Luang Prabang and Pakse airports, Friendship Bridges I, II and IV, the Boten checkpoint, Boten railway station and Khamsavath railway station. It is not valid at Friendship Bridge III, at Nong Nok Khiene on the Cambodian border, or at any Vietnamese land gate, and the fee is not refunded if you arrive at a port it does not cover. We do not publish fees: your coordinator confirms the current figure.

Questions travellers ask most

Is Vientiane worth more than one night?

One night is enough for the stupa, Wat Si Saket, an hour at COPE and dinner by the river. A second is worth having only if you want Buddha Park as well, or if your onward train or flight would otherwise be a rush.

Can I cross to Thailand from Vientiane?

Yes. Friendship Bridge I is about twenty-five kilometres from the centre and the crossing to Nong Khai takes half an hour plus formalities; a shuttle carries you over the bridge. From Nong Khai there are overnight trains to Bangkok. The Lao e-visa is valid at that bridge.

Which station do I need for the train to Luang Prabang?

The Laos–China railway station north of the city, not Khamsavath, which serves the short link across the Mekong to Thailand. Both are e-visa ports, but only one of them goes north — it is an easy and expensive mistake to make on your own.
