The quietest country of the six and the one that punishes bad planning hardest — its e-visa is valid at nine ports only, and none of them is on the Vietnamese border.

The country you slow down for

Laos has no coast, one city that could be called busy, and the lowest population density in mainland Southeast Asia. Travelling here means accepting that a 200 km road day can take seven hours and that this is, mostly, the point. The reward is a country where the famous places are still small: Luang Prabang is a town of 50,000 that you can walk across in twenty minutes, and the morning almsgiving that everyone photographs is a daily routine rather than a performance.

The north is mountains and river valleys — Nong Khiaw, Muang Ngoi, the road to Phongsaly. The centre is the Mekong plain and the capital. The south is flatter and hotter, with the Bolaven coffee plateau, the Khmer temple at Wat Phou and the river islands at Si Phan Don where the Mekong is fourteen kilometres wide. The Laos–China railway now covers Vientiane to Luang Prabang in two hours, which has quietly made a short Laos trip possible for the first time.

When to come

November to February is dry, clear and cool enough in the north to want a jacket after dark. March and April bring both the heat and the agricultural burning, which puts a haze over the northern valleys — if you are coming for the landscape, avoid those two months. The rains from June make the river fast and green and the waterfalls worth the trip; the slow boat still runs, and the countryside is at its best. September and October are wet but the light after the rain is exceptional.

Three means the month usually works everywhere in that region, two means it works with a plan, one means rain, heat or sea conditions will shape your days. No month is closed to all six countries: when the Mekong is in flood, Bali and the Philippines are at their driest.

Borders

Crossing in and out — read this before you book

Laos has the strictest border rules of the six countries, and they are not obvious from the visa portal. The Lao e-visa is valid at nine named ports only: three airports, three Thai Friendship Bridges, the Boten crossing and two railway stations. It is not valid at any Vietnamese land gate, not at the Cambodian gate at Nong Nok Khiene, and not at Friendship Bridge III. At those crossings you buy a visa on arrival instead — and the e-visa fee is not refunded if you turn up at the wrong gate holding one.

Two more Lao details worth knowing: the e-visa must be carried as a printed sheet — a photo on your phone is refused — and the digital immigration form is filed twice, once within three days of arriving and once before you leave.

Combinations

What it joins well with

Thailand, by the bridge at Chiang Khong and then the slow boat — the classic way in, and the one most people enjoy most. Vietnam, by road from Dien Bien Phu, Vinh or Hue, which are long days for travellers who like them. Cambodia, through the 4000 Islands in the far south, which is the only overland link between the two and pairs neatly with a Mekong-following route.

Questions travellers ask most

Is the Lao e-visa valid at every border?

No — at nine ports only, and none of them is on the Vietnamese or Cambodian border. Everywhere else you buy a visa on arrival. This is the most common and most expensive Laos planning mistake.

Is the slow boat worth two days?

If you like rivers, yes: two long days down the Mekong with a night at Pak Beng, and the scenery does not repeat. If you are short of time, the flight from Chiang Mai or Bangkok takes an hour.

Is the railway a good way to get around?

Between Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang, yes — two hours instead of seven on the road, and the tickets sell out several days ahead in the high season, which is a good reason to have someone booking them for you.
